Engaged? What to think about when choosing your venue

The first steps in your wedding journey are to find a wedding venue, which also means setting a date, a budget, a location and an approx. number of guests… ok overwhelming much?!

Don’t panic, here are some key things to discuss as a couple to get the ball rolling – the internet can be a daunting place when it comes to planning your wedding!

Choosing your venue is a significant decision as it will set the scene for your entire day.

1. Numbers

Discuss your guest list, make a draft so you have an idea of the size venue you require

2. Location

This might be an easy one for you if you are both from the same place or perhaps you’d like to elope/have a destination wedding!?

Consider important people that you want to be a part of your day and their travel requirements.

3. Important things to you

Consider the style of venue you might like, what is important to you as a couple? An outdoor ceremony? Lake views? BYO beverages? Do you have cultural aspects of your day that you need to ensure are meet? Heck, perhaps hubby want’s to play a round of golf in the morning (if that’s the case – we have the perfect venue for you)!

Whatever it might be – make some notes so that you can go through these when exploring your venue options.

4. Accommodation

Is there accommodation for you as the bridal party AND your guests onsite or nearby? Perhaps you want to accommodate your entire party onsite!

5. Parking

If you know some or lots of your family will want to drive or not big drinkers, ensure you choose a venue that can accommodate this

6. Accessibility

This may be important to you if you have family/.friends that require accessible bathrooms/access etc.

7. Do it yourself Vs. All done for you

Venue can range in this area, so be sure to get an understand from your venue of what is included, what isn’t and what is expected of your as the hirer.

Ask what support you will get from the venue for your day to ensure you feel comfortable with what they provide or if perhaps you need to outsource a provider to support you.

8. WEATHER

This is a big one – we’ve seen all sorts over the last few summers haven’t we. If you’ve chosen an outdoor venue, be sure to ask what the contingency plan is so you feel comfortable with the backup plan should you need one.

By considering these factors and preparing a list of important things to you, this can really help to navigate through all of the options out there before making the big decision!
